The interest of Indians in the Persian language, the encouragement of literature-patronizing rulers in India, the rapid advancement of Persian literature in India, and the rule of some Iranian-origin dynasties in India were among the factors that led to Persian dictionaries published in India relying more than any other source on the principal texts of Persian literature. Consequently, portions of Persian literary texts were examined within these dictionaries. One of the reliable yet lesser-known Persian dictionaries is “Zobdatol Favayed,” compiled to aid in understanding Persian literary texts. In this dictionary, alongside recording words and their meanings, Shir Khan Soor also addressed the difficulties of Persian poetry. Since the share of explained difficult verses from Anvari is prominent in this dictionary, the present research, in a descriptive, analytical, and comparative manner, examines the explanation of the difficulties of several verses from Anvari’s poetry in this dictionary. Attention to the recording of Anvari’s verses and providing variant readings, prose paraphrases of Anvari’s verses, explanation of difficult words, and addressing the challenges of Anvari’s divan, criticism of the commentators’ perspectives on Anvari’s poetry, and the use of Anvari’s divan as a source for extracting entries all indicate the status of Anvari’s poetry in the compilation of this dictionary. Although Shir Khan Soor’s pioneering role in explaining Anvari’s verses, his distance from the original homeland of the Persian language and its users, and occasional inaccuracies and his sources—which are predominantly Indian—necessitate cautious use of this dictionary, it is undoubtedly indispensable for resolving the complexities of Anvari’s poetry.
