An analysis of social stratification in Saadi’s Gulistan

Abstract

Social stratification or the system of social inequalities, as an objective and tangible reality, has existed in human society throughout history, and social thinkers have reflected on it in different ways. Poets and literary writers have also paid attention to this social phenomenon in their works. Saadi, the renowned poet of the 7th century, especially in Gulistan, which is a detailed description of the society of the 7th century, has paid attention to stratification and social inequalities, which considering the sensitive period in which Saadi lives, the recognition of this phenomenon in his works can even solve some important historical questions. But this issue has not been studied much scientifically. Based on this, the main goal of this article is to examine the social stratification in Saadi's Gulistan and while providing a clear perspective on social inequalities and the stratification system in the 7th century society, reveal his point of view on this matter. The research method is descriptive content analysis. The sample under investigation is the Gulistan book and the unit of analysis is the word. The research tools are categories and indicators that measure social stratification, which was used to determine its validity from the validity of the content and to determine its reliability, the Test-Retest method was used. Based on the results of the research, Saadi has a comprehensive view of social stratification and mentions ninety different social strata. In addition, his view on stratification is based on a functionalist approach and he always tries to base this approach on ethics.
