Mythological history of turquoise in Persian literature

Abstract

Colors and colorful ornamental stones have been the focus of people in human societies since the past until now because of evoking various emotions. In every society, depending on the type of belief and belief bases of people and some characteristics of colors, certain colors and colored stones are more prominent than other colors and have penetrated into various aspects of individual and collective life of people. Turquoise stone and turquoise color have enjoyed such a position among Iranians since the past until now. In this article, with the help of literary texts, mineralogy and public literature, the author has tried to show the value and properties and functions of this magical stone to the common and soecial people and prove that this stone and the color attributed to it have been noticed because of the mythological attitude of the people, which has its roots in ancient Iran. In fact, due to its association with Tishtrya, the angel of rain, this color has become sacred in the eyes of Iranians in Mazdayasna literature and has acquired a magical power.
