Poetry is an imaginative speech; i.e., it is the creation of images that are constructed by poetic ideas, and emerges through the artist’s manipulation in speech and expression on the vastness of two synchronic and diachronic axes by means of words.
Since the sixth century, coupled with changes in the context of oratory and the presence of terms from various sciences in rhetoric and imagery of poetry, some poets laid the basis of imagery of their poetry on the scientific elements. Anvari is among the poets who laid the foundations of images of his poetry on terms from various fields of knowledge. This article, written through library research method, tries to answer these questions while investigating terms from astronomy, music and medicine used in Anvari’s collection of poems: (a) what is the frequency of terms from each field? (b) what rhetorical and synchronic differences are there between scientific terms and other words in each line? (c) through what techniques has Anvari reflected the terms related to each of the three aforementioned fields is in his images? Research results demonstrate that most of Anvari’s imageries have been created employing elements mostly from astronomy, then music, and lastly medicine. Analysis of knowledge-based images in Anvari’s poetry illustrates a significant relationship in synchronic axis, and an interconnected network of combination of words and expressions from astronomy, music and medicine along with rhetorical and diction techniques is observed.
