Macaronic verse is a kind of poetry that has a long history in Persian language. Macaronic is a poetry in which some lines are in one language and some others are written in another language. This essay studies the evolution and representation of Macaronic poetry until the end of the seventeenth century. This study therefore tries to answer the following questions: what kind of changes has happened to macaronic verse throughout these centuries, who are the major macaronic versifiers, and what are the features of their poetry? This article covers two hundred and thirty macaronic poems from twenty nine Persian poets and overall it includes three thousand and three hundred and four verses. Ultimately, the results show that macaronic verse as a poetic form has started in the eleventh century and until the seventeenth century, it has developed in terms of quantity. Also in terms of quality, it has moved towards variations of subject matter and functionality of significances, while at the same time saving a spirit of entertainment in its structure and contents.
